Talk is Cheap
A number of years ago, I felt as if I was becoming slowly estranged from someone who, at the time, was a good friend. Despite my best efforts, and assurances on that person's part that we would remain close, we drifted apart and now we haven't spoken in years.
It is remarkable how fragile are the bonds that bind us to each other. At times, they fray and unravel glacially, but like melting ice caps, try as we might to avert such an outcome, dissolution is inevitable.
But there are also times when these bonds snap precipitously, and then the truly curious thing is that though we are in a position to repair them, we do nothing but watch the severed ends drift away on a tide of wistfulness.
I visited an old folks' home today, to visit an old caretaker. I told her that two of my cousins had married. Having had little to no contact with my family over the months, she had had no idea.
Adding some new people on Facebook today, and realising that increasingly my knowledge of my friends' lives is their MSN status updates and sporadic blog posts, perhaps I too, have no idea.
